CBT Motorcycle Course For Novice Riders

If you're 17 and older If you're 17 or older, an A1 license allows you to take off your L plates and use a scooter or a small motorcycle, and carry a pillion rider.

A two day course without any tests. It's a great way to get started with riding, focusing on reviewing the fundamental components of a bike and slow control exercises.

Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)

The CBT is a mandatory course for all novice riders. It generally takes a full day to complete and if you are able to meet the required standards at the end of the day, your instructor will present you with a certificate of accomplishment that is known as a DL196.

During this training you will learn the basics of operating on a motorcycle. You will be supervised by an experienced instructor throughout the day. In addition, you will be offered a short theory session which will teach you about the code of conduct and road rules as well as safe and safe lane positioning. You'll learn how to maintain and inspect your bike, and how to transport passengers (if necessary).

The next part of the CBT involves practical riding on the spot. Your instructor will create an area of safety where you can test your abilities. You will start off slowly and work on basic safety checks before moving on to stop the motorcycle and braking properly. Your trainer will be in contact with you throughout this time, and will help you until they feel confident that you are able to complete the exercises to a safe level.

In this portion of the training, you'll be introduced to various types of roads and traffic conditions. You'll learn to safely navigate roundabouts, traffic signals and one-way streets. You will also master the fundamentals of cornering figures of eight, and emergency stops.

This is the last part of the CBT. Your instructor will take you on different routes. You'll be in radio contact with your instructor, who will monitor your progress throughout the course. You'll be awarded an CBT DL196 Certificate if you are able to prove that you are able to handle a motorcycle and handle various road conditions.

Module 1 Theory Test

The first step towards getting an A1 license is passing the motorcycle test in theory. This is a 40-minute test that assesses your knowledge of traffic laws, road rules signs, and general safety. Following your CBT, you will start your module 1 training. You will be riding the bike that is appropriate to your particular category of licence. If you pass both Module 1 and Module 2, you'll be able to take advantage of the freedoms offered by an A1 light licence. This will permit you to ride a bicycle up to 125cc, without a learner licence, and will not require you to display your L-plates. A1 licenses also permit you to ride with a companion and you don't need to repeat the CBT every two years. This is an excellent alternative for those who want to enjoy the excitement of motorcycling. The next step from an A1 license is an A license that is unrestricted and requires a full driver's licence.

Module 2: Practical Test

Module 2 is the practical part of your motorcycle licence. Once you have passed Module 1 and the theory test, you are now ready to take Module 2. This test will give you an A1 license that permits you to ride a motorcycle up to 125cc with the power of 11 BHP. You can also carry passengers and ride on motorways.

The Mod 2 test is a practical riding test with about 10 minutes of independent riding. The examiner will be following you along a predetermined route that will vary based on traffic and road conditions. The route includes busy junctions as well as roundabouts and dual carriageways. You'll need to be able to navigate in a variety of conditions.

Module 2 will test your ability to recognize the road ahead, anticipate traffic and navigate roads. This is important because it allows you to make quick decisions when driving on the road. For instance, if driving on the road and see a car swerving towards your path, you'll have to be able to react quickly.

It is also expected to show good slow control. This means you have to be able to move away with ease, stop without fear, and maintaining speed. It's also essential to demonstrate effective brakes and be able to make a smooth U-turn whenever needed.

Once you've passed both parts of the Module 2 test, you'll be sent your A1 license in the mail. You'll be able to ride your new bike around the countryside or commute to work in style and ease. The new A1 license is your ticket to freedom and adventure, whether you ride a supermoto or scooter.

Licensing

This course is intended for those who have completed Module 1 & 2 and wish to enhance their riding skills and develop a bond with their bike. It usually involves more advanced exercises & training such as observing your turns and leaning to control the bike at higher speeds. It also covers hazard prevention and high speed cornering, in addition to brakes and braking at high speeds. You will be out for six hours with a Ride coach, and you can choose your own bike.

This is an excellent option for novice riders who aren't sure whether a full licence is what they want. It gives you a full training package including the Module 1 & 2 tests as well as the off-road techniques for your Cat A licence, so it will give you everything you need to get on the road without having to pass the theory test first.


You will start with a smaller bike to become comfortable with your riding position and your balance before moving on to a larger bike for your class. This is typically 500cc motorbike. You must be at least 16 years of age to participate in the Basic RiderCourse (BRC). If you are younger than 18 years old, you will require your guardian or parent to sign the Covid Release and Waiver of Indemnification form (click here) as well as the Motorcycle Safety Program Parent/Guardian Agreement.
